As you enter Broughton Down from the east you pass through impressive stands of Beech woodland that fringe the steep hill. However it is only when you are out on the open downland that the excellent views to the north and east across the Test Valley can really be appreciated. Sheep and rabbit grazing keeps the turf short, which provides
ideal conditions for the flowering plants. The range of grasses and plants support nationally important colonies of butterflies and other insects.
