Birdlife on the site includes woodlark, nightjar, Dartford warbler and occasionally hobby. The reserve is home to an important invertebrate population, including 20 species of dragonfly.
Although the NNR can be visited at any time of year the mires become waterlogged, and dangerous to cross, in winter.
