Description:
The Reserve makes up some 55 hectares of roughly equal proportions of water and land. It includes five lakes and a mixed habitat of ponds, seasonally flooded pools, reedbed, and woodland. It is a spectacular site for birds, but the reserve's wetland and woodland habitats support a diverse community of plants, fungi and animals: so far well over two thousand species have been identified and more are regularly added to the list.
The character of the site is almost totally man-made: the lakes and ponds were excavated and nearly all trees planted. It was the first example in Britain of a gravel-pit after use being developed for the purpose of nature conservation, led for many years by the Harrison family and in particular Jeffery Harrison, after whom the visitor centre is named.
