Why Hungerford?

A small historic market town in the midst of the North Wessex Downs, Hungerford is a shopper’s paradise and a great base for exploring the landscape and attractions of the area.

With possible Danish or Norman origins, and a name derived from “hanging wood by the ford”, Hungerford itself can be dated from the 12th century. Historically a coaching stop, with connections to John O’Gaunt and the civil war, Hungerford has always maintained the role of market town for the area.

The town's historic market status is perpetuated today by the significant number of small independent shops providing personal service across a wide range of products. The town also enjoys a wide variety of eating places that cater for the quick cup of coffee, the lunchtime snack or the three-course evening meal.

The town is surrounded by an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where visitors may enjoy a relaxed walk and an abundance of flora and fauna. The Kennet & Avon Canal also passes through the town and provides enjoyment for many, whether in boats or on the tow-path.

So whether you come for the shops, or spend longer to enjoy the surroundings, Hungerford has something for everyone.
