The area around Alresford is very rural in character, so horses are very much part of the local landscape. Take a lesson or a hack at a local riding school, or bring your mount and be a little more adventurous.

  • The South Downs Way stretches for 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne, in East Sussex. In Hampshire the trail passes through hillside woods, mixed farming  and many quaint villages. Links with the riding trails at the Queen Elizabeth County Park. No permit is required for the South Downs Way. For more information contact the South Downs Virtual Information Centre www.vic.org.uk
  • The Meon Valley Trail traces the route of the former railway that carried strawberries to London.  Today, it is a peaceful recreational trail with plenty of wildlife.  Riders are welcome and can access the trail from several points as well as linking with the South Downs Way south of Warnford.  Details are on The Winchester Watercress Tour on the Countryside section of Great Outdoors on www.visitwinchester.co.uk
