Here are some suggestions for short local walks near Pulborough, but for those looking for something more challenging you can take the steep walk up the side of the Downs to the South Downs Way. 1. This reasonable short walk starts in Pulborough and follows the line of the River Arun, and it visits the tiny church at Wiggonholt and gives the option of visiting the RSPB at The Pulborough Brooks. For more details www.bbc.co.uk/southerncounties/community/walks/pulborough.shtml

2. Take a three-mile walk from West Grinstead to Shipley windmill. Stop and visit the grave of writer Hilarie Belloc who is buried in the churchyard in West Grinstead.

3. For a longer but level walk you can take the 6.5-mile route from Pulborough to Amberley that takes you along the river, old canal and marsh with the South Downs as a dramatic backdrop. 4. From Amberley, a short train ride away, walk up the South Downs Way high onto the Downs above the Amberley Wild Brooks. Use any of the networks of footpaths and bridleways to work your way south to Arundel station and then catch a train back.
