  • The Pulborough locale is a fascinating area in which to cycle, featuring sleepy country lanes carved deep into the local sandstone, the rolling countryside around the Arun and for the more adventurous, the South Downs Way, high on the downs to the south of the village, offering off-road terrain for both the novice and expert mountain biker. Whilst the national cycle network misses the Pulborough area, the touring cyclist may join this on the Downs Link at Southwater, or the South Coast Route over the downs at Bognor Regis.
  • For a great short ride with a few hills to challenge, and with lovely views, head for the village of Nutbourne, and cycle up Nutbourne Road. Pass the fantastic folly of Beeding Castle high on the hill to North Heath, where you turn right and head back via the wooded hollows of Gay Street and Stream Lane. This ride is about 6 miles in all.

Once off the A29 and A283, all lanes are generally quiet, and some virtually traffic free. Do, however, always follow the highway code and remember when off-road to give right of way to walkers and horse riders.
  • For an interesting easy off road ride, start at Wiggonholt Common (no parking at Wiggonholt hamlet) and head along the road toward Pulborough and then head up the bridle path that forms the driveway of the "West Sussex County Golf Course (take care on the short section of the A283).  Cross Hurston Warren until you come out at Hurston Place, where you can follow around 2 bridle paths that lead to West Chiltington, one of which passes through the famous Wells Houses, built in the 1920s to resemble Medieval cottages. Return to Hurston Place via the other bridle way, and then take the road and bridle way to Redford House to return to the RSBP reserve. About 4 miles. Best for adult cyclists rather than children, the A283 can be busy.
  • From Amberley, a short train ride away; ride up the South Downs Way high onto the Downs above the Amberley Wild Brooks. Use any of the networks of bridleways and minor roads to work your way south to Arundel station and then catch a train back.
  • A ride across Wiggonholt Common via Rackham, Greatham to Coldwaltham is worth the extra distance from Pulborough. Again you could start at the RSBP reserve to avoid the main roads, and once on the common, the ever-changing vegetation from dense forest to the wilds of the Wild Brooks will keep you enthralled
  • The more undulating lanes to the south west of Pulborough, to Fittleworth, Sutton and Bignor will reward any rider with countless picturesque thatched cottages, hidden hamlets and downland views, and for those braving the South Downs way, car parks to enable ready access are at Bignor Hill, (access from Bignor) Kithurst Hill (access from B2139 Storrington to Amberley Road) and the top of Bury Hill on the A29.
