Chanctonbury Ring
Probably the most famous landmark on the South Downs is this clump of beech trees on the skyline at Chanctonbury. An Iron Age fort of about four acres forms the base of the Ring, a grove of trees planted by Charles Goring of nearby Wiston House in 1760. It was largely destroyed by the hurricane of October 1987, but has been replanted.
