Welcome to British orienteering – an adventure sport for all
Orienteering means maps, varied terrain and adventure. It doesn't matter how young or old or fit you are. You can run, jog or walk, you decide your own pace. Orienteering is a sport where competitors navigate their way between control points marked on a specially drawn map. There are various orienteering disciplines, foot orienteering is the most common.
Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks and school playgrounds. The most challenging orienteering takes place in remote areas which have demanding terrain and fewer paths.
For most people the first point of contact with British Orienteering Federation is the National Office at Darley Dale near Matlock in Derbyshire. Every day we answer queries from Clubs, Associations, individual members, event officials and newcomers. The office is a busy but friendly place and we welcome enquiries and visits from members or anyone with an interest in orienteering.
