‘Walking with Farmers’
Tractor rides, deer farming, organic crops and livestock, conventional crops, orchards, woodland, conservation work, landscape history, wildlife, local produce – all features of the Kent Downs farm walks programme that takes place over the summer. There is even an opportunity to scrump cherries, try locally reared meats on a barbecue, sample delicious cobnuts and even quash local wine !
The Farm Walks are organised by the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Unit and are all led by the farmer themselves. Participants have the opportunity to explore beautiful parts of the Kent Downs AONB that they might not usually be able to access on public rights of way. The walks clearly demonstrate the diversity of farming in the Kent Downs and how this shapes the AONB landscape. As well as explaining their cropping programme, the farmers who lead the walks are able to demonstrate how they manage the countryside through Schemes such as Countryside Stewardship. The walks are a great opportunity to see and appreciate some rare and stunning wildlife too – pyramidal and fragrant orchids, man orchids, broom rape, hares, black veined moths to name but a few !
