New Hostel to provide for visitors to South Downs

A new hostel has now been opened on top of the South Downs catering for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and with 5 rooms for people using wheelchairs ….. basically catering for everyone

Wetherdown Hostel, situated at The Sustainability Centre on top of the South Downs near East Meon in Hampshire, caters for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and has 5 rooms for people using wheelchairs ….. basically it caters for everyone. It is only 4 metres from the South Downs Way and the hostel itself is unique, as it is transformation of an old naval building, which was an environmental nightmare, into a place, the charity running it, can be proud of. The project was part funded by DEFRA’s Rural Enterprise Scheme and the Charity Bank provided the loan for the extra cash needed. Centre Manager, Terena Plowright said ‘We have replaced the windows with triple glazing to keep the heat in, lagged the roof with Theremafleece (sheep wool), put up a new roof, fitted photovoltaics to supply our electricity by sunlight and much more – we are very pleased with the ‘new look’.’ Wetherdown will provide a much needed overnight stopping point for walkers of the South Downs Way and will also be used by visitors of the Centre (school groups, course attendees, etc).
