Countryside Alliance Best Rural Retailer competition

The Countryside Alliance’s second annual Best Rural Retailer competition is now open to nominations at www.bestruralretailer.co.uk. This national competition will applaud and celebrate the unsung heroes of the UK's rural communities: its retailers.

The public is invited to nominate the retailers they feel go the extra mile for their customers and for rural life, whether through promoting local food, breathing new life into a community through diversification or by keeping a traditional business alive.

The 2006 categories are:
1 Best Local Food Retailer
2 Best Village Shop/ Post Office
3 Best Diversification
4 Daily Telegraph Best Traditional Skills

Countryside Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart will once more lead the national judging panel, aided by Zac Goldsmith of the Ecologist, Dr Stuart Burgess of the Commission for Rural Communities, Simon Heffer of the Daily Telegraph, Mike Stones of Farmers Weekly and Alexia Robinson of British Food Fortnight.

Alliance Chief Executive Simon Hart commented: 'The aim of this competition is simple: to celebrate people. The Alliance exists to champion the diversity and colour of rural life, and this competition is a great platform from which to do that. Retailers form the centre of rural communities and we are delighted to be able to bring their passion and dedication to national attention. So if you know a rural retailer who makes a real difference to your community, be sure to nominate'.
