This summer, visitors to Henley will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the town with the return of Blue Badge guided walks.
Two light-hearted walks - ‘Macabre Happenings and Scandals’ and ‘Introduction to Henley’ - are each scheduled to take place once a month from May to July.
Perfect for those visitors who wish to learn about Henley’s colourful past, the Macabre Happenings and Scandals walk is a fun evening stroll through Henley. Visitors will meet several ghosts who will tell of scandalous and gory stories including the woman who had her tongue nailed to a post, Henry V111’’s confessor, drunken brawls at the White Hart, tales of six in a bed and also of ghostly goings on at the Kenton Theatre. Starting from Hotel Du Vin at 8pm, the walk is scheduled to take place on 1st May, 5th June and 3rd July.
For those visitors who wish to know more about the background of Henley, the afternoon Introduction to Henley walk will paint a picture of life in the town, both past and present. Visitors will learn, amongst other things, how the town developed, the different ways in which people earned their livelihood, the story of the Town Hall and Brakspear’s brewery, the kings associated with Henley, secret hideouts and tunnels and the story of how Henley became a regatta town. Starting at 2pm from the Hotel Du Vin, the walk is scheduled to take place on 19th May, 16th June and 21st July.
Both walks will be lead by Rendez-vous Blue badge guides Bobbie and Debbie, who have been guiding in Henley since 2001.
Tickets for both walks will be available from Henley Visitor Information Centre in King’s Barn, by visiting www.rendezvous.freeuk.com
