Day of Firsts at Newbury Racecourse Family Day
Thousands of people are expected at Newbury Racecourse on Sunday (August 5) for ‘Vodafone in the Community Day’ – a fun-packed family day of racing which includes several notable ‘firsts’.
A new event for Newbury will be the BBC’s Reading and Writing (RaW) ‘roadshow’ event. The campaign is aimed at improving adult literacy and it is the first time the RaW roadshow has visited any racecourse.

A Royal visit to mark Royal International's centenary
The Princess Royal is to make an official visit to the Longines Royal International Horse Show to celebrate its Centenary and the Diamond Jubilee of the British Horse Society, which owns the show.
During her visit on July 26, the Princess will watch the unique Ford Ranger Eventing Grand Prix from Hickstead owner Douglas Bunn's private box and be invited to make the presentation to the winner.

Some of the most famous names in British cooking will be hoping to win over a new audience as they prepare to take part in the UK’s first-ever food festival designed especially for children. Among those aiming to inspire the taste buds of a new generation will be the festival’s patrons Raymond Blanc and Sophie Grigson. Joining them will be Prue Leith, Antonio Carluccio, best-selling children’s food writer Annabel Karmel, Nora Sands from the TV programme Jamie’s School Dinners and many more. The Children’s Food Festival will take place over the weekend of 14 and 15 July 2007 at Abingdon Airfield in Oxfordshire. Entrance is free.

You can't help wondering if when God was creating the earth, he made a rather curious mistake. As he was working out where to plant his exotic fruits to make sure they grew as well as possible, somebody must have distracted him (probably health and safety, concerned to know if his new species had passed EU inspections), and raspberries, which he was just about to plant in Brazil, ended up somewhere off the M9, just outside Falkirk.
