SAVILL GARDEN OPENS AS FOOT AND MOUTH PROTECTION ZONE LIFTED AROUND THE ROYAL BOROUGH

Savill Garden has now re-opened to the public as the 3km foot and mouth disease protection zone set up around the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead has been lifted.  This follows advice from both Defra and the Crown Estate vet that the disease has been contained after an outbreak in Surrey during September.

Nature of Britain: Portsdown Hill

 
 

The chalky grassland which overlooks the city of Portsmouth has been restored from a scrubland and dumping spot back to grassland, allowing nature to make a breathtaking comeback.
Built at a time when it was wrongly thought a new Napoleon might be planning an invasion, Portsdown Hill is a vast chalky grassland dotted with Victorian Forts.
For hundreds of years the downland here was continually grazed so that tiny chalkland plants could thrive, bringing with them rare butterflies and other insects.

Exbury Gardens has swept the board at the Royal Horticultural Society’s prestigious Autumn Show in London this week.
Out of 18 entries the New Forest gardens took 17 prizes - four firsts, five seconds, four thirds and four commended.

MUSEUM’S SCHOOLS FARMING PROJECT WINS SUPPORT OF LOCAL FIRM

Kontron UK Ltd enables Bognor school to join the ‘Year of Food and Farming’ at the
Weald & Downland Open Air Museum

School children from Bognor Regis will be taking part in a year long countryside project at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton, near Chichester, thanks to the generosity of a local firm. Chichester-based computer specialists Kontron UK Ltd have financed the transport costs for around 45 Year One pupils from Bartons Infant School to visit the Museum for the duration of the project.

All the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional harvest will delight visitors to the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum’s ever-popular festival of the countryside on 6 & 7 October. The Autumn Countryside Show allows an evocative glimpse of the past, when the whole rural community was involved in the vital tasks of harvesting and preparing the land for the following year’s crops, as well as showcasing and celebrating other traditional countryside activities.
