Christmas card recycling scheme to help UK tree planting
A Christmas card recycling scheme to help fund tree planting around the UK has been launched by the Woodland Trust and national campaign Recycle Now.
It hopes to gain a nature conservation boost from helping to tackle the mountain of extra waste created over the festive period. This includes an estimated extra three quarters of a million tonnes including over one billion Christmas cards generated by households in England alone.

The advisory calendar is A3 size (A4 size when closed) with high quality and colourful illustrative equine photographs and monthly land management advice accompanying the date boxes. Advice contains information specific to Surrey's Landscape Character Areas and also more generic points (e.g. how to go about applying fertiliser, when and why practices such as harrowing and rolling should be carried out etc.) The Calendar will help horse-keepers to keep pasture in good condition whilst also assisting wildlife, the landscape and the environment.

£50m lottery grant goes to new Sustrans network
The Sustrans Connect2 project yesterday scooped the £50m People's Lottery prize, the largest award ever decided by public vote. It means the national network will expand even further, to take in a derelict rail tunnel near Bath and a neglected ferry in Northumberland.
