Major acquisition for the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust

 
 

With just under one week until the deadline, the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has managed to raise enough money from a successful public appeal to be able to buy a piece of precious floodplain meadow habitat at Gallows Bridge Farm on the Bucks/Oxon border.

In search of a better chicken?

 
 

Hugh's Chicken Run, on Channel 4 last week, woke even more people up to what really goes into making their cheap chicken. The vast majority of people are shocked (if they didn't know about it already), angry and disgusted at what the programs have revealed. There seems to be only one line of defence left in the fight against intensive poultry farming practices, which is that cheap chicken is all some people can afford. Let's address that right now.

RSPB’s big garden birdwatch 26-27 January

 
 

The world’s biggest bird survey is back again. In 2007, over 400,000 people took part by counting the birds in their garden for an hour. Together they spotted 6 million birds. Over the past three decades participants have made a significant contribution to monitoring garden bird numbers and helped highlight that some garden birds are in need of help.

Point-to-Point season starts at Detling in 2008

 
 

The South East's point-to-point season starts on January the 26th at Detling in Kent with six races scheduled. The first of 14 meetings due to take place across Kent, Surrey and Sussex is testament to the sport's success in the face of a hunting ban, foot and mouth and blue tongue all restricting the competitors ability to participate.

Nurturing nature would be a healthy, enjoyable and valuable New Year's resolution for people to make, according to The Wildlife Trusts claim. They have highlighted some ways that people can become more wildlife-friendly during 2008.
