Description:
Forest Canoe Club was founded in the late summer of 1988 as a result of an Adult Education Course in kayaking run by the Forest School in Horsham, hence the name of the club. In the early years the club had close links with the Adur Canoe Club and Chichester Youth Wing using some of their instructors as all club members were beginners. Joint trips were run with the Adur Club.
Membership initially was mainly adults but now has a very mixed age membership of over 60 paddlers, of which half are under the age of 16.
Club evenings are held at the Southwater Country Park lake on every Tuesday from the beginning of May until early September. Over the winter there are also fortnightly pool sessions at Cottesmore School on Sunday evenings between 5-6pm. In addition there are regular official club trips to cater for all tastes, as well as many unofficial paddles organised informally by club members, including surfing and visits to the Thames weirs and Nene Whitewater Centre.
