Car free Walks in the Thames Valley and Chilterns

15 car free country walks in South East England that are linked to form a ring around Reading. They are easily reached by train from London or Reading. The linear walks through the scenic Thames Valley and Chilterns countryside all have car free access and are between 4 and 10 miles long.

The walks are varied and visit many places of interest.

Nearby attractions are also described.


Refreshment is available on all walks, usually at a pub or two on or near the walk. A good reason for leaving the car at home.

Defra Country Walks

The DEFRA-run Country Walks website has now been redesigned to make it more interactive and user friendly. The guide lists those walks and rides open to the public under the Countryside Stewardship and Environmentally Sensitive Areas Schemes in every county in England. It includes information about the wildlife, plants and scenery of each site. There are lots of good ideas about other nearby access sites to visit. The website contains new county maps showing the location of nearly 1800 access sites. Clear maps are given for individual routes and 320 new routes have been added to the website since June.

Faversham

The Faversham area, stretching from the beauty of the Kent Downs to the flatlands of the north Kent marshes, is a great place in which to take a walk, ranging from the traditional Sunday afternoon stroll through to guided tours of the town and rambles through the countryside. Interesting walks include the Saxon Shore Way, along the banks of the Swale, Oare and Faversham Creeks and around the Oare Marshes Nature Reserve, and in Blean Woods. The woods are very old and almost half of it is so special for wildlife that it has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest."

National Trails

National Trails are the official routes, selected by the Governments Countryside Agency and the Countryside Council for Wales , to offer some of the best walking in Britain. National Trails are long distance routes for walking, cycling and horse riding through the finest landscapes in England and Wales.

North Oxfordshire Circular Walks

Cherwell District Council publishes a pack of 11 full colour circular walk booklets to aid exploration of hidden North Oxfordshire. The booklets come in a sturdy, splash-proof pack and feature: Tried and tested waymarked routes Easy to read maps and directions Variety of walk options including short cuts and village trails (distances range between 1 and 14 miles) Guide to pubs and facilities en-route Details of local history and points of interest The pack can be purchased from Banbury Tourist Information Centre 01295 259855 and Bicester Visitor Centre 01869 369055 for £5.50 (+ £1 p&p if ordering by post).
