Route Description This is one of 8 waymarked "Inland Trails" on the Isle of Wight. The trail starts at Shide on the southern edge of Newport, the Island's largest town. The route quickly rises to St Georges Down, passing gravel workings and later descends into Arreton, one of the most fertile farming areas on the Island - the area is now famed for its garlic. You soon pass near to Knighton Gorges - all that remains now is a gate but this is the site of an old mansion house which burned to the ground and is now reputed to be the most haunted part of the Island! You now climb up again, crossing Brading Down and descending near to Nunwell House with its ancient oak trees. Soon you will be in Brading, a busy village which is now inland but which was once a busy port, until the harbour silted up and became Brading Marshes (now an RSPB reserve). Follow the trail across the marshes to Bembridge Windmill, owned by the National Trust. From here it is a short walk along the High Street to the sea at Bembridge Point.
Terrain Details There are several steep sections both up and down where the trail traverses the downs. The latter stages of the walk are fairly flat but may be waterlogged in winter.
Access Info / Public Transport The start point is 10 minutes walk from Newport Bus Station. The end point is a very short walk from Bembridge which is on a bus route. Call Southern Vectis Buses on 01983 532373.
Services / Amenities Newport is a large town with shops, supermarkets and many pubs and cafes. Arreton has the White Lion pub along the route and you also pass the Arreton Barns Craft Centre with a pub, gift shops and cafe. Brading has many pubs, cafes and shops as does Bembridge.
